iVideoCamera – an app that lets you record video on any iPhone (no really)

iVideoCamera was finally approved by apple last night after many many months of approval process fun. This app lets your record about 3 fps on any iPhone (well its for you 3g owners out there). I know it seems like we just put out this app (and we kinda did), but VideoSlides was a result of iVideoCamera not getting approved though we firmly believe the photo snaps to video with its three different capture modes warrants its own app.

Apple is definitely opening up what we can do with video capture (i.e. UStream and Knocking Video) so we expect to improve the frame rate and length of iVideoCamera in the next update.

THE program is great but the video’s are small and also the resulution. Will this all be better in the NeXT upgrade?

I just think it’s amazing that the app go ok-ed by Apple.
But, one suggestion.., I would looooove a Flickr share (also on the iTimeLapse app). That would be magnificent.

flickr sharing is both updates (along with twitter, 12 secs, tumblr and more)

  13. Ken says:

I think what y’all did he us great….what’s mote shocking is that apple approved it. Hopefully the update will pass through quickly.

I’m curious though, the actual limitations of the framerate couldn’t exceed 15 fps??? Correct?? Also mms would be fantastic… This could actually make me keep my 3G longer….

You get credit though for a good start and having it out there first!!! Thanks

  14. Dmitry says:

    !!! forward application update
    thanks good
    15 fps-320×240

  15. eortiz says:

make it 15fps and I’ll buy it… as it is now,, is not worthy…

I know it only does 3fps, but I say buy the app, and support the developers so they can make it better. As someone else commented, it would make me keep my 3G iPhone rather than get a 3GS, and not jailbreak my phone.
15fps would be awesome. Hope it happens soon :-)

  20. Zeng says:

hey, I can see videos in camera roll (photos) but ReelDirector and Tweetie 2 cannot find your videos from the camera roll. Could you fix it?

  21. admin says:

thats an issue with apple os only listing certain files — we are working for a fix and hopefully apple will correct in update

  22. Mike says:

So I’ve seen a video done on a 2G with Cycorder that was very very nice resolution and frame rate.

Does Apple not allow your app to do videos that nice? I mean to say, do they purposely say “No your app is not allowed to record videos at the quality the camera is capable of.”?

  23. Kent says:

I was able to send my first video via email to my wife but can not anymore. Any thoughts? I would really like to share short videos of our son through ail or mms

  24. admin says:

sorry — we are working on a new version to support larger files to email. as a work around you can upload to youtube and then download as mp4

  25. admin says:

we are working on getting better quality – hopefully we will get better quality to that of cycorder

  28. daniel says:

hi i think the ivideocamera is a great app but it needs somethings like longer time limit, auto focus, and zooming in and out

  29. Very cool, nice work! Especially impressed with how good the audio quality is. Love the export to YouTube feature: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fayh7OHo8gc

Thanks for developing the app, happy to pay £0.59 :)

  30. Hi, first of all, way to go guys! This one is a must have :)
Secondly, I downloaded the saved video from Camera Roll to my local PC via Picasa. But when I tried to play it (the extension is mov, so QuickTime is playing it), it looks like the file is corrupted or something like that, it just has green color on it and nothing else.
Any idea why is it like this? Or do you have any suggestion as how to copy the video locally (no … not sharing it to YouTube).
Thanks! keep up the good work, looking forward for the next update!

  31. admin says:

sorry – that happens on some computers and we are working on fix – you can play the video with VLC player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ as it can correct for the issue

  32. JOhn says:

I am excited to see that Apple has gotten their head out of the their A$$ and finally allowed a video app that works on 3g iphone’s. This was the primary reason I jailbroke my phone. For now, I’ll wait and see if the quality reaches that of QIK or Cycorder since both of those apps ( jailbreak required ) have framerates of 8-15 FPS and produce results quite watch-able. QIK also allows Youtube and Facebook uploading while Cycorder doesn’t.

Keep up the work guys and if you are allowed by APPLE to match the capabilities of QIK, I’m sure you will win over many a jailbreaker with this app!

  33. Jim Neuburger says:

I have been able to download the videos from the iphone to my desktop, but they do not play on the most recent version of QuickTime. Sound comes through but only a green screen for the video. What can I do to play them on my desktop? Thank you.

  34. admin says:

there is a odd codec issue on some computers — playing the video in http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ VLC fixes the issue — we are working on fix for next version

  35. Presto says:

I emailed a vid to a friend and he had the same green screen issue that Chris P and Jim N mention above. The video played fine on my phone, on Facebook, and in the email that I copied myself on as a further test with him. He’s using Snow Leopard, I’m still on regular Leapoard.

Loving it so far! A few things: After a vid’s been saved in my Photo Gallery, I’m unable to email it. When I click to ‘Share,’ the vids disappear and only photos show. I can play the vids from within the gallery fine tho, but it looks like I can only email them if I do so within iVideoCamera right after shooting. Also, at the very end of a video clip, there’s a slight metallic sounding noise. Weird. I’m also looking forward to larger dimensions and higher frame rates. The audio syncing seems to be a bit off with only 3fps.

Great job though! Can’t wait for updates!!

  36. Daniel says:

Who ever is in charge of publishing needs to do something about this app, or this will scale further in.asp.

  37. Tabitha says:

I recently downloaded your app, ivideocamera. When I first launched the app it asked for my info; name, email, etc. Tonight it goes straight to recording I did not get the chace to enter ANY info- what gives?

  38. Dave Parkinson says:

Let me just first say, thanks for bringing this app to bare, and I do like it, so I don’t intend to be negative. In fact, I used the app almost as soon as I got it to record a great video of my daughter. The problem is, I’m really frustrated because I cannot get the video to play anywhere but on iPhones.

So, this is also a follow-up to what Presto said.

I’m having the same problem as everyone previously mentioned with the video I took. Won’t play except on the iPhone. Everywhere else green screen with audio. So, I went and I downloaded VLC, as suggested, and it does the >strangest< thing with the video: it splits it in half diagonally and then stretches both sides to fit the… remaining triangles. Hard to explain, but I hope you get the idea.

Is there anything… any program that I can use to play or convert or somehow view this video??? I tried everything I have, but nobody will play nice with it. I’d really like to be able to send it.

Of course, the other problem I have is that, once I saved the video to the photo album and closed the app, I can’t post the video to youtube from the app anymore. In the future I suppose I’ll post to youtube then view it there… or something…

  39. Chuck Says says:

One word … FINALLY! Thanks. This is a needed addition to a fantastic device. I too can’t wait for the updates.

  40. admin says:

sorry that you are having this problems — we are working on making the app much more robust and should have update out shortly

  41. Linda says:

    Hello,
Great app, keep up the good work!
One thing I experience, though, is that
the maxvideo length is limited to 0:07 and
I can’ t find any setting to change this. Any idea about what could it be?

  42. Kim says:

Please do something with the limit. 1 minute is nothing.

    Nice app :)

  43. Sean says:

Update update update!!!! ASAP PLEASE!!!! cool app!!

  44. Playafied says:

Love the app!! Real good beginning to what I think will be a great app altogether!!! Feels like a native app too… Can’t wait for the upgrade with the framerate sped up. One more suggestion… a timer in the app that shows how long its filming for. Keep up the good work!

  45. Tom says:

Hey Guys – thanks sooooo much for this app. Totally worth the money. I hope you do well. The resolution doesn’t look bad at all on the iPhone screen. Great work! I can’t wait to see the next version

  46. john says:

green screen problem with mac ?

maybe you need the free quick time plugin
    PERIAN or flip4mac
    better both
they are free and very useful generally.
or open with VLC is free

  47. admin says:

green screen problem is a result of us encoding at the wrong timebase for certain graphic chips to playback on — it always worked on our computers so we didnt catch it — its fixed in the update which will be out shortly.

  48. Ryan says:

Can’t thank you enough for this app, just curious, any idea how high you can bump up the framerate? Has your update been submitted to the App Store yet?

  49. MattB says:

Do you have a ballpark timeframe as to when this new update will be released? And how many fps will it be?

  50. Kelly says:

Nice v1.0… get this to 15 fps, fix the green screen problem many of us have, add a copule of the things other mentioned like Flickr and this is worth closer to $4.99 … get to version 2.0 with all the yet unrequested enhancements and >15 fps… and maybe worth even more.
